FAQs on Green Schools
Who fills out the official application?
The Green School Coordinator for that school.
When is the deadline for application?
March 1, 2011.
Who signs the application?
The Principal for that particular school should sign the application and indicate the date signed.
Where do we send our application?
The application needs to be sent to your County Intermediate School District office or to the designated County Administrator. Please contact Michigan Green Schools (810-626-2865 or email) if you need help to find this person for your school.
What do we receive if we become an Official Michigan Green School?
The school receives an official certificate signed by the governor for that school year. There is an official flag that schools may purchase for a nominal fee of approximately $20. If funds permit, we may give each school a tree seedling to plant. Additionally, many counties hold an Award Ceremony Day in April/May to commemorate participating schools that achieved Green School status.
What happens if we already earned Michigan Green School designation?
The official designation is awarded annually to participating Michigan schools. For second and third year schools we have a pennant to attach around the edges of your flag, similar to a winning professional team showing the years they have been champions.
What if a school wants to do more than ten points in a school year?
We are working on legislation that should be completed this school that will allow a school to officially become an Emerald School under state law if they reach 15 of the 20 points; furthermore, they can achieve the highest status – Evergreen – if they do all 20 points.
What educational support do we receive with Green School during the school year?
Under the Public Act 146 of 2006, the local programs are to be administered by either the county government or the intermediate school district. Free educational materials will be available through them in most cases. We are also providing free posters, school energy projects for students, etc. Your local coordinator will be supplied with a solar cooker that schools can borrow for solar cooking projects. You may contact Kris Moffett at Michigan Green Schools (810-626-2865 or email to find your county coordinator.
Who runs your organization?
The entire operation (apart from county government or ISD coordinators) is run by Green School volunteers who do not receive compensation. We rely wholly on donations from corporate and private sources to purchase solar cookers, operate this website, etc.
