Fun Ways to Earn Points

Above, students at Hartland’s Round Elementary enjoy a solar cookout. This earned Round one of its twenty points for being a 2009 Michigan Green School. Try these fun activities to earn points!

Michigan Wildlife Awareness

The majestic American bald eagle is making a great comeback in Michigan. Pictured is an immature eagle who has yet to develop the characteristic white head plumage.

The eagle is no longer on the endangered species list but is still classified as a threatened species by the DNR in Michigan.

The DNR reports 480 eagle nests in our state primarily in the upper and northern lower peninsulas in 2006, the latest year of record.

One of the 20 Points of the Michigan Green School Program is adopting a threatened or endangered animal such as the bald eagle. One place to adopt is the National Wildlife Foundation.

One great idea for raising funds for the adoption comes from Pius X Catholic School of Flint. They had a "bring your favorite stuffed animal to school" day, charging 25 cents to bring a stuffed animal. They then took the funds to adopt their real animal.

More activity tips:

  • students can vote on the animal they want to adopt
  • school can hold a naming contest
  • students can create a special bulletin board display

FAQs on Green Schools

Who fills out the official application?

The Green School Coordinator for that school.

When is the deadline for application?

March 1, 2011.

Who signs the application?

The Principal for that particular school should sign the application and indicate the date signed.

Where do we send our application?

The application needs to be sent to your County Intermediate School District office or to the designated County Administrator. Please contact Michigan Green Schools (810-626-2865 or email) if you need help to find this person for your school.

What do we receive if we become an Official Michigan Green School?

The school receives an official certificate signed by the governor for that school year. There is an official flag that schools may purchase for a nominal fee of approximately $20. If funds permit, we may give each school a tree seedling to plant. Additionally, many counties hold an Award Ceremony Day in April/May to commemorate participating schools that achieved Green School status.

What happens if we already earned Michigan Green School designation?

The official designation is awarded annually to participating Michigan schools. For second and third year schools we have a pennant to attach around the edges of your flag, similar to a winning professional team showing the years they have been champions.

What if a school wants to do more than ten points in a school year?

We are working on legislation that should be completed this school that will allow a school to officially become an Emerald School under state law if they reach 15 of the 20 points; furthermore, they can achieve the highest status – Evergreen – if they do all 20 points.

What educational support do we receive with Green School during the school year?

Under the Public Act 146 of 2006, the local programs are to be administered by either the county government or the intermediate school district. Free educational materials will be available through them in most cases. We are also providing free posters, school energy projects for students, etc. Your local coordinator will be supplied with a solar cooker that schools can borrow for solar cooking projects. You may contact Kris Moffett at Michigan Green Schools (810-626-2865 or email to find your county coordinator.

Who runs your organization?

The entire operation (apart from county government or ISD coordinators) is run by Green School volunteers who do not receive compensation. We rely wholly on donations from corporate and private sources to purchase solar cookers, operate this website, etc.
